The Hayfield girls basketball team was led by a trio of freshmen as it beat No. 6 seeded Zumbrota-Mazeppa (7-17 overall) 73-42 in the Section 1AA West quarterfinals in Hayfield Thursday.
The No. 3 seeded Vikings (19-7 overall) were led by freshman Carrie Rutledge, who scored 16 points as ZM focused its defense on Hayfield seniors Bhrett Zahnle and Jo Bungum.
“The freshmen stepped up and made shots,” Hayfield head coach Fred Kindschy said. “Zumbrota threw a triangle and two on Bhrett and Jo and the freshmen were able to connect from the floor and play good defense.”
Hayfield will play No. 2 seeded Kenyon-Wanamingo in the Section 1AA West semifinals 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mayo Civic Center. The Vikings lost both games to KW in the regular season, but the first contest went into three overtimes and the second one went to double OT.
