The Austin girls basketball team avenged an earlier loss to Mankato West (9-16 overall, 8-13 Big Nine) when it played big in the second half to beat the Scarlets 85-56 in Ove Berven Gym Tuesday.

The Packers (12-13 overall, 10-11 Big Nine), who have won four in a row, closed the game on a 36-16 run. Shayley Vesel poured in 29 points in the win for Austin.

“In the second half we came out flying. We had great passing,” Austin head coach Todd Johnson said.

Austin trailed 15-6 early on against West, but it was able to bounce back as four players scored at least 12 points. Austin will close out its regular season at Winona 7:30 p.m. Friday.

“We’re probably that team right now that you don’t want to play in the playoffs. We’re playing great basketball,” Johnson said.
