Apollo Liquor Store in Austin has gotten a new owner.

Jim Baldus, owner of Jim’s Marketplace and Star Liquor, and his son Ryan Baldus took over the Apollo Liquor Store and the conjoining convenience store from previous owner Dave Olson when it went up for sale. The deal was finalized on Tuesday and the store is still open for business.

“[It’s] just a good opportunity, and a good opportunity for my son to learn the business to further his knowledge of the liquor store business,” Jim said.

The liquor license was passed on Monday night at the Austin City Council meeting. The license is under Ryan’s name but Jim will have a big part in helping run the business. Ryan and Steve Aberg —who has worked at the store about 12 years — will co-manage it. Audrey Thorp will manage the convenience store. Jim said the employees were allowed to stay if they wanted, although some did leave.

Jim said his son has a large knowledge of liquor and wines, and will take a class to further his knowledge on the different wines.

“He’s worked for me for three years at the other liquor store, so he’s knowledgable,” Jim said.

The liquor store has not closed, but the convenience store was closed for a short time and just reopened this past Monday.

Jim said they added about 1,140 new items to the store and cleaned it up a bit. Jim is excited to get the business underway. He said they will start doing a few projects, such as painting, getting new shelving, restocking and changing some projects, in a few weeks, but there will be no major projects as of yet.

“We’re excited, we wish it was spring so we could start on the outside,” Jim said.
