Packer boys hockey team falls to Red Wing

The Austin boys hockey team looked like it was ready to make a big move, but it suffered a couple of late breakdowns as it lost 6-4 to Red Wing in Riverside Arena.
The Wingers (5-15-1 overall, 4-9-1 Big Nine) scored four third period goals and they put the game away when Sam Hanson scored his fourth goal of the day with 22 seconds left to make it 6-4.
Austin (3-17-1 overall, 0-13-1 Big Nine) scored back-to-back goals late in the third when Daniel Bollingberg scored a goal and Dan Larson scored a shorthanded goal to make 5-4 with 2:38 left in the game.
“The coolest thing is we didn’t quit,” Austin head coach Erik LaRock said. “We just had some breakdowns that led to some of their goals, but I was happy that we kept fighting. We’ve got to stay out of the penalty box and if we keep playing with the intensity that we did at the end of the game, we’ll win some games.”
Austin had tied the game at 2-2 to start the third period when Trevor Stevens fired in a slap shot, but the Wingers responded with two goals in a three-minute stretch. Jacob Johnson had 26 saves for Austin, which has four games remaining in the season.
“At the beginning of the year I told them we’ve got to be playing our best in the playoffs. Hopefully we can fix some things,” LaRock said.
