The Northwestern Singers are tapping into everything music fans have come to love about artists like Stevie Wonder, The Jackson 5, Temptations and Gladys Knight & the Pips when the group presents “Motown” later this month.
The Northwestern Singers, a singing group made up of local musical talents, will present two shows on Jan. 24 and 25 at the Paramount Theatre.
“Motown,” it’s really the label, songs from the 60s and 70s,” said long-time member Alice Holst. “That’s when Motown was the biggest.”
The show features songs that most will know including, “Sunshine of My LIfe, “Please, Mr. Postman,” “Midnight Train to Georgia,” and “Superstition.” It will also feature a medley from the Broadway presentation of “Motown.”
The annual winter show is a genuinely anticipated show, coming at a good time of year when there isn’t much going on. It’s a perfect outlet for music lovers.
“A lot of people talk about doing the show some other time other than January,” Holst said. “But there’s not a lot else going on, and people want to get out and do something.”
All the hallmarks of a Northwestern Singers show will be represented including choreography and laughs.
“This show will have The Jackson 5,” Holst said. “You couldn’t do Motown without The Jackson 5 and let me just say: We will all look like The Jackson 5.”
The Northwestern Singers pride themselves on bringing a quality show to the stage and making sure the audience has something to remember.
“There hasn’t been a time we haven’t made people laugh and feel good,” Holst said.
This year will have a little something extra when it welcomes some guests to the stage including Molly Kate Kestner, Mary Bissen and Brian Gorman.
“Sometimes we have guests like children’s choirs, but it’s all based on availability,” Holst said.
The show all boils down to two very simple creeds, and it’s what’s been keeping fans coming back again and again both in the seats and on the stage.
“It’s really two-fold,” Holst explained. “No. 1: To provide quality entertainment for the Austin area, and No. 2: It’s an opportunity for people from all walks of life to sing and have some fun.”
