The Austin Daily Herald took home three awards in the Minnesota Newspaper Association contest in 2014.
Herald photographer Eric Johnson’s photo of a bull and rider at the 2014 Mower County fair took first place for sports photo for dailies with a circulation less than 10,000.
“Awesome picture at the bull riding event,” the judge wrote. “Love the eyes on the bull. The angle the cowboy fell at leaves you wondering if he survived!”
The Herald also took third place in general excellence for dailies with circulation less than 10,000 at the annual MNA awards banquet, which was held in Minneapolis Thursday night.
“Very solid use of large photos that make for compelling fronts,” the judge wrote. “Nice mix of stories and content all around.”
Reporter Trey Mewes and former reporter Matt Peterson took third place in Category X, which recognized excellence in local coverage of cops and courts stories for all dailies.
