Dorothy B. Fischer, 96, of Bloomington, Minnesota, formerly of Austin, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015, at Martin Luther Care Center in Bloomington, Minnesota.



Dorothy B. Barnitz was born Nov. 5, 1918, in Austin, Minnesota, to Robert and Ella (Hartje) Barnitz. She attended Austin Public Schools, graduating from Austin High School in 1936. On Dec. 19, 1935, Dorothy and Nathan A. Fischer were married in Austin. The couple raised two daughters. Dorothy was a very active member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, where she served in many roles, including WELCA and teaching Sunday school. In her later years, Dorothy was a yoga instructor. She also enjoyed tie quilting, raising monarch butterflies, and working in her flower garden. She played racquet ball at the YMCA well into her 70’s.

Dorothy is survived by her daughters: Susan (Jon) Brunsvold of Minneapolis, and Kathryn (Daniel) Davies of Burnsville, Minnesota; six grandchildren: Dr. Nancy Brunsvold (Dr. Ralph Rossi) of Seattle, Washington, Anna (Marc) Gross of Minneapolis, Dr. David Davies (Jun-Li Wang) of St. Paul, Sara (Michael) Ryan of Minneapolis, Elizabeth Davies-Schopf of Santa Monica, California, and Aaron Davies of Tempe, Arizona; ten great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Ella Barnitz; her husband Nathan A. Fischer on Jan. 22, 2003; her great-grandson Kyle Michael Ryan; and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin, Minnesota, with the Rev. Gerald Giese officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Austin. Memorials can be directed to the Martin Luther Care Center Memory Care Unit in Bloomington, Minnesota, or to recipient of donor’s choice. Worlein Funeral Home of Austin is assisting the family with arrangements. Condolences may be expressed to the family online
