Red kettles turn purple and green

The challenge is on, and the kettles are racing to fill to the top. The question is: Will the Minnesota Vikings or the Green Bay Packers win?

The Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign is holding its annual Packers vs. Vikings fan challenge from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday outside Walmart. There will be a purple and a green kettle, and the one that generates the most money will win the challenge.

Lt. David Amick said the challenge is still in need of volunteers to ring bells and gather donations.

“If people would like to volunteer, they’re more than welcome to wear their [team’s] colors, take up a bell and ring,” Amick said.

The challenge money will be counted Monday to determine the winner.

Amick helped start the challenge after he had done something similar while working and living in Illinois.

“We make a big to do about it, we make a big challenge out of it and everything,” Amick said.

He is excited about the challenge, and personally vying for the Vikings. He said the past two years the challenge has been going on, the Vikings have won both.

“If they’re a true Vikings or Packers fan, this is the time to show it, and of course they’ll be helping out for a good cause too,” Amick said. “We’re just trying to get a push for people to get out there and get excited about it.”

The Red Kettle Campaign is still looking for volunteers throughout Dec. 24. To volunteer to ring bells, people can go online to salvationarmynorth.org, or speak with Salvation Army Volunteer Coordinator Kris Maier.
