Boys basketball: Packer control the floor in win over Rochester Mayo

The Austin boys basketball team was looking a little more like its old self as it forced 25 turnovers in a 64-50 win at Rochester Mayo Friday night.

Levi Vierkandt led the way for the Packers (2-2 overall, 2-1 Big Nine) as he had 14 points, six steals and one turnover and Gach Gach added 10 points and 12 rebounds in the win. Austin had just eight turnovers in the win.

“When your plus 17 in the turnover column, you better win,” Austin head coach Kris Fadness said. “Levi got most of his points off of turnovers and we had some run-outs. He just had a good floor game tonight.”

The Gach brothers combined for the highlight of the night and maybe the season as freshman Both Gach, who had 10 points, came up with a steal and he ran down the court to throw an alley-oop off the glass to his older brother Gach Gach for a slam dunk with eight minutes left in the first half.

“It’s been such a tough week that we needed the boys to have some fun tonight,” Fadness said. “I thought we came in with a good attitude and we were in control the whole game.”

University of South Dakota commit Dan Jech had 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Spartans (3-2 overall, 2-2 Big Nine) but he did most of his damage after the Packers had put the game out of reach.

“He’s really good, but his point total is very deceiving,” Fadness said.
