Janice was born Nov. 11, 1942, in Austin, Minnesota, to Andrew and Hilda (Rudlong) Haugland. She attended Austin High School, and then began her working career with American Can in Austin, and later Hormel. Jan was united in marriage to Gary Duncan, and they later divorced. After years away from Austin, she returned home and worked with her sister Rochelle in real estate with Century 21. Jan had a passion for many things in her life. Her interests included flowers, baking, gardening, crocheting afghans, quilting, and painting. She was a longtime member of the Austin Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary Aerie No. 703, enjoyed an occasional trip to the casino, and loved dining out with her friends and family. Jan’s family would like to thank Habitat for Humanity for painting her home in Austin and the Austin Kiwanis Club for providing the paint, and friends at St. Olaf Church in Austin for their gift of a special prayer shawl.  Special acknowledgement to the Stacyville Community Nursing Home for their compassion in caring for Jan, as well as many other area care providers that assisted her along the way.

Jan is survived by her children: Mark (Margo) Sampsell, and Candice Sampsell Kieran; sisters: Rochelle Jensen, and Patti Page (Jeff Bendickson); grandchildren: Elizabeth Sampsell and friend Ryan Ennis, Bobby Olson, and Samantha Sampsell; step-sisters: Florence Maloney, and Marlys Farris; sisters-in-law: Elvina Haugland Solomonson, and Elsie Haugland; many adored nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
