Alumni update: Area athletes are making their mark

FOOTBALL
Southland grad Alan May had three catches for 11 yards as Winona State University (4-5 overall) lost 33-8 to Augustana Saturday.
On the season, May, who is a junior at WSU, has 33 catches for 433 yards and three TDs. He has returned 17 punts for a 7.41 yard average.
May’s brother Chris May is also on WSU’s roster.
Austin grad Ryan Synoground has led Crown College to three straight wins after the team started the season 0-6. Synoground threw for 105 yards and ran for 6 yards in a 17-14 win over McMurray and he threw for 100 yards and a TD and ran for 90 yards in a 31-13 win over Martin Luther.
Grand Meadow grad Andrew Bell, a sophomore at Rochester Community and Technical College, has three tackles, one fumble recovery and one pass defensed in four games for the Yellowjackets (7-3 overall).
Ike Vesel, son of Austin football coach Brett Vesel, has four tackles in six games for University of Minnesota-Duluth. Vesel is a defensive tackle for the Bulldogs (9-0 overall).
SOCCER
Austin grad Nicole Lipari played in 17 games for University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (5-8-5 overall) this season and Lipari had two assists and six shot attempts on the season.
VOLLEYBALL
Hayfield grad Abby Blanchard had 1 dig and 1 kill in Briar Cliff University’s 3-1 loss to Jamestown College Nov. 2 and Blanchard had 12 digs for BCU (19-11 overall) in a 3-2 loss to Doane College Oct. 25.
Hayfield grad Jessie Foster has 213 digs, 31 set assists and serving aces for RCTC (26-3 overall).
SWIMMING AND DIVING
Nick Brehmer is in his sophomore season as a swimmer at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. In two meets, Brehmer has swam the 50-yard freestyle in 22.55 seconds, he has swam the 100-yard freestyle in 49.87 seconds, he has swam the 200-yard freestyle in 1:49.66.
BASKETBALL
Austin grad Ajuda Nywesh is off to a hot start at Lake Region State College. Nywesh averaged 14.5 points, 5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game in his first two contests. Nywesh is shooting 56 percent from the field and 33 percent on 3-pointers.
HOCKEY
Former Bruin Christian Folin has played in 6 games for the Minnesota Wild and he has attempted 6 shots in those games.
Former Bruins goalie Tyler Bruggeman is off to a strong start this season for St. Scholastica. Bruggeman is 2-0 in two starts and he’s stopped 65 shots, while allowing four goals.
Former Bruin Johnny Simonson has two assists in six games for the University of North Dakota (5-1-1 overall).
Former Bruin CJ Smith has one goal and four assists in seven games at UMass-Lowell (5-1-1 overall).
