Austin native Charlie Parr is coming home to Austin Wednesday night for a concert that will benefit local veterans and could be released as a live record.

Austin’s Jesse Smith will kick off the show at 7:30 p.m. at Austin’s VFW, 300 Fourth Ave. NE. Parr, a folksinger now living in Duluth, will play at 9 p.m.

Tickets are $10 per show, and all proceeds will go to Beyond the Yellow Ribbon, a group that provides resources and volunteers to help veterans and active service members.

Parr will record his performance with the hopes of releasing it as a live album — if all goes right.

“We’ve been recording a few shows,” Parr said. “We’re going to record this one to see if we can’t put it together for a live record at some point.”

However, Parr said several variables have to come together for the live recording to make it to a release. Most importantly, Parr said he’ll need to have a strong show, and then the acoustics and recording quality will need to be right. Parr said it’s not fair to the crowd to stop and spend time getting those things right during a concert.

“The people who are sitting there, they come first,” Parr said. “It’s a show for them.”

Along with benefiting Beyond the Yellow Ribbon, Wednesday’s show will also serve to kick off the VFW’s winter concert series.

Parr is no stranger to playing concerts that benefit charitable causes. He recently did a few shows for a housing project for the homeless and another for Men As Peacemakers.

“I try to make sure that I’m centering at least one show a month around issues that I care about,” Parr said, noting those shows are often on poverty and homelessness.

The Wednesday before Thanksgiving is often an evening when friends and family get together when home for the holiday.

That night will be no different for Parr, as he said he hopes his mother and other relatives who live in Austin will be able to attend the show.

“That’s a big weekend. Everybody’s come home for Thanksgiving, visiting,” Parr said. “Hoping to have a nice crowd there.”

Dave Hundrieser, a harmonica player from Duluth, will play with Parr, and Parr’s wife, Emily, may accompany him on a few songs.

Parr, Emily and their children will get to spend Thanksgiving with his family in Austin and with her family in Winona.

“This is going to be a nice year for us to get down and see my mom,” Parr said.

If the live recording works out, it could be released as soon as January. Even if it doesn’t, Parr’s fans won’t have to wait too long for new music. Parr recorded his next studio release, “Stump Jumper,” in North Carolina, and he’s now working on the post-production process with plans to release it next spring.

The album was recorded in an old tobacco farm barn converted into a recording studio, and Parr said it was an idyllic, wooded setting that was a great place to record.

“I think it turned out really, really nice,” he said.

The holiday weekend will be a busy one for Parr. He and Hundrieser are set to back Mississippi blues musician Leo Welch at Hell’s Kitchen in Minneapolis on Friday, The Red herring Lounge in Duluth on Saturday and Ed’s No Name Bar in Winona on Sunday.
