Dr. Richard Schindler died Saturday as a result of a fall he took off of a bridge a few feet from the ground that was part of the mountain bike trail he helped create, according to county officials.

Mower County Coroner David Strobel told the Star Tribune Wednesday Schindler landed head-first on the ground, which broke his neck and instantly killed him. Strobel said the angle Schindler fell contributed to his death more than the fall itself.

Schindler was wearing a helmet.

Strobel wasn’t immediately available for comment Thursday and Friday, and local law enforcement officials deferred comment to Strobel.
