I.J. Holton seeking to expand library

I.J. Holton Intermediate School leaders are looking to expand the school’s library and are holding a fundraiser to make it happen.

Earlier this month, the school kicked off its plan to raise $1,000 to purchase about 80 new books for the library. The school receives 100 percent of the donation from the fundraiser, which is being hosted through www.funds4books.com.

“We do receive substantial funds through the district, but we usually use that to replenish what we have,” I.J. Holton Librarian Michelle Graff said. “We really needed help expanding our library, we’re still a new school and we do have books, but we need help expanding it.”

Organizers put together a page on the website — which can be found at www.funds4books.com/Fundraiser?code=A61C — to help reach their goal to buy books that students have requested.

Students are helping decide what books are bought through the fundraiser.

“They really impressed me,” Graff said. “I put a box on my desk and I just explained I wanted the [students] to give requests. The box was filled twice and I have kids coming in, they’ll put a request in the box and they come in the next day and say, ‘Is it here yet?’”

The box on Graff’s desk is the size of a shoe box, and she said she’s pleased with the interest the student’s have shown in getting new books. The students’ requests have include new novels that have movies attached, world history books, graphic novels and books about cars.

“It was such a diverse request, like all of them, they were so different,” Graff said.

As the school librarian, Graff was happy to see the children excited for the fundraiser.

“The kids are so excited,” she said. “They kind of shocked me with their enthusiasm about it.”
