The Austin Fire Department will have its annual Fire Prevention Week Open House on Wednesday, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, at the fire Station.

People will have the chance to tour, explore and learn about the fire station. There will be a fire hose set up to experience what it is like to spray the hose, fire extinguishers can be used to achieve the knowledge of putting out a small fire, auto extrication Demos will be held on the front apron, station and truck tours, and the ability to dress up like a fire fighter. Sparky the fire dog will also be greeting people.

Austin Fire Department, McDonald’s, Target, Echo Lanes, Family Video, CineMagic 7, Austin Park & Recreation, the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center — City of Austin and Friends of the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center will sponsor the Fire Poster Contest Winners Party on Tuesday, Oct. 7, at 3:30 p.m. The event will be held at McDonald’s.

About 370 fourth-graders participate in the Junior Fire Safety Program, which educates on fire safety. Each child is expected to create a fire safety poster to be entered into the contest. Two children from each school, including Pacelli Catholic School, Banfield, Neveln, Southgate and Sumner Elementary Schools, are chosen as poster winners. The overall fire safety poster winner is entered into the state competition.
