Hormel Foods announced Tuesday that it donated $10,000 to three local organizations to help combat hunger in Austin.

The money was split three ways with Meals on Wheels and Salvation Army receiving $4,000 each and the United Way of Mower County’s Women’s Leadership Initiative receiving $2,000.

The Women’s Leadership Initiative is responsible for the Weekend Food Backpack Program that provides easy-to-prepare foods for children and siblings to eat over weekends, ensuring children are still eating when not in school.

“I get to be the one to present this, but this is really the result of 1,800 employees,” Plant Manager Timothy Fritz said. “This is not possible without the hard work and dedication of those people.”

This is the fourth year that Hormel has donated funds to manufacturing communities to share with nonprofits in their respective communities. In 2013 Hormel donated a total of $220,000 to local hunger relief programs and will provide 39 plant locations with funds in 2014.
