James D. Whalen, 89, of Austin, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2014, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin.

He was born Oct. 10, 1924, in Detroit, Michigan, to Hubert and Thelma (Mitchell) Whalen.
Survivors include a son, Mike (Teresa) Whalen, Salem, Oregon; two daughters, Jean Cain, Chatfield, Minnesota, Cyd Petersen, Austin, Minnesota; nine grandchildren, Justin Cain, Matt Cain, Giles Cain, Kellie Jonasson, Brian Petersen, Jessica Petersen, Tracy Burnick, Jason Whalen, Jamie Whalen; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother, Hugh (Chris) Whalen, Austin, Minnesota.
He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bonnie; son, James Whalen Jr.
