Game and Fish Building open again at the fair

The Game & Fish Building is ready for the 2014 Mower County Fair. Exhibitors will include Izaak Walton League Austin Chapter 10,the Mower County Soil and Water Conservation District, Friends of the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center, Mower County Pheasants and Habitat Forever, and the National Wild Turkey Federation.

The Jay C. Hormel Nature Center will be giving the following presentations at the Game & Fish Building during the fair:

—Owl Talk, Tuesday, 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Meet Guka the live Barred Owl, learn how to talk like an owl, and discover tools they use to survive. Larry Dolphin will present.

— Dragonflies, Wednesday, 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. From dragon-like nymphs to beautiful flying mosquito hawks. Their story will be told with live examples and a theatrical transformation that may occur to all who attend.  Julie Champlin will present.

—Let’s Hear it for Herps, Thursday, 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Meet the Nature Center’s live cold-blooded animals. Sammie Peterson will present.

—Monarch Magic from Egg to Migration, Friday, 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. This incredible journey from egg to caterpillar to butterfly is highlighted with live examples. Marie Anderson will present.

—Bison Bison, Saturday, 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. A traveling grocery and hardware store on four legs. Meet the many bison parts that were used for survival by native populations. Taylor Miland will present.

—Steven Chihak, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer, will be at the Game & Fish building Friday.

—The National Wild Turkey Federation will be hosting a youth turkey calling contest on Saturday. Registration begins at 1 p.m. with the contest starting at 2 p.m. The contest will take place outside to the east of the Game & Fish Building.

—Austin Chapter 10 supervises and maintains the Game & Fish Building prior to, during, and immediately after the fair.
