Charles “Chuck” W. Berg, 86, of Lyle, Minn., died Thursday, June 26, 2014, at Sacred Heart Care Center in Austin.

Chuck was born in Lyle Township on March 10, 1928, to Frank and Janet (Kavle) Berg. He attended school and graduated from Lyle High School in 1946. On Sept. 13, 1950, he married Dorothy DeVriendt at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Austin. Dorothy died on Sept. 26, 2009.

Chuck was employed with the city of Lyle as a police officer (1962-75) and maintenance worker from 1962 until his retirement in 1993. When Chuck first started working as a police officer, he used his own car to patrol the town. He also was the assistant fire chief on the Lyle Volunteer Fire Department. Chuck was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church.

Chuck loved woodworking and spending time with his family. He was a man of few words but when he did speak, you knew there were words of wisdom. He did not speak of love but you felt it through his woodworking. And through those great works, his love will live forever.

Chuck is survived by his children; Barbara (Lowell) Crabb of Kingsley, Iowa; Betty (Gary) Meyer of Lyle; James (Taylor) Berg of Ft. Dodge, Iowa; Patricia (Mark) Stevens of Austin; Polly Allen of Bruno, Minn.; and Joan (Jeff) Yocom of Austin; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Terry Berg of Tucson, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews.

Chuck is preceded in death by his parents, wife Dorothy, one brother and three sisters.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, June 29, 2014, with a prayer service to start at 6:30 p.m. at Mayer Funeral Home in Austin.

A Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 30, 2014, from Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Lyle with Fr. Swaminatha Pothireddy officiating.

Burial will follow at Woodbury Cemetery in Lyle.
