HAYFIELD —The Lyle-Pacelli softball team stuck with Southland for most of the game, but in the end the Athletics’ season came to an end in a 7-2 loss in a Section 1A West play-in game in Hayfield Monday.
The Athletics (3-9 overall) tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third when Courtney Walter, who went 4-for-4, doubled in a run with two outs and the game stayed tied for the next two innings. The Rebels (2-18 overall) made their move in the sixth inning when Brooklyn Johnson doubled in a run and Haley Kiefer drove a two-run, two-out double to right field to put Southland up 7-1.
“We’ve done pretty good all year except we find ways to give games a way a little bit and our youth really shows through,” LP head coach Jeff Yocom said. “As long as they learn from their mistakes, we’re definitely going to get there.”
LP went three years without filing a varsity team before this season and the Athletics had to play a lot of middle schoolers this season. Yocom hopes his team will continue to work to get better over the summer.
“We’ve asked a lot of girls to play a lot of positions and they’ve come through,” Yocom said. “I’ve been told by almost every coach that we’ve played that they’ve played well above their age level.”
