Gerald Rodger ‘Jerry’ Montgomery, 83, of Austin, Minn., died Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at his home.

He was born Feb. 19, 1931 in Madelia, Minn., to Howard and Stella (Bjoin) Montgomery. A 1948 graduate of Madelia High School, Jerry enlisted in the United States Army in November 1951, proudly serving his country as a corporal in the Korean War before his discharge in August of 1953. In 1955, he moved to Austin. He worked as a Federal Meat Inspector for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, retiring July 3, 1987. In 1981, Jerry and Gladys ‘Larrie’ Stark were married at Grace Lutheran Church in Austin. Gladys passed away in July 2007. Jerry was a lifelong member of the V.F.W. and American Legion, and also belonged to the Moose Lodge, Fraternal Order of Eagles, and the Disabled American Veterans. He was past-president of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE). He enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing and gardening.

Survivors include two sons, Rodger Montgomery of Austin, Minn., and Mark Montgomery of Edwards, Mo.; a step-son, Jerome Wing of Austin, Minn.; three step-daughters, Linda (Bill) Bottema of Isanti, Minn., Marci (Steve) Burton of Austin, Minn. and Linda Lestrud of Albert Lea; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Martin of Apex, N.C.; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren, and his former wife, Shirley Montgomery of Austin. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Stella; his wife, Gladys; his step-son, David Martin; three sisters; and two brothers.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 4, 2014, at the Worlein Funeral Home Chapel in Austin, with the Rev. Jeff Forbes officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Military honors by V.F.W. Post 1216. Interment will be in the Veteran’s Cemetery, Preston, Minn. Memorials can be directed to recipient of donor’s choice, or to the Montgomery family, in memory of Gerald. Services prearranged and performed by Worlein Funeral Home of Austin.
