Austin Football conference switch coming next year

Austin Public Schools won’t play Big Nine football starting in fall 2015.

That’s because Minnesota is switching from conference play to district scheduling. Activities Director Lisa Quednow-Bickler told the Austin Public Schools board about the changes during the board’s meeting Monday.

This means the school will be grouped with about 15 like-size and program schools, instead of the same ten schools they used to compete with in the Big Nine. They will come up with schedules as a group.

This change is taking place because many of the schools had scheduling issues, and some schools had different organization processes and school enrollment sizes, which made other schools resist playing them.

Administrators said the team will probably play very similar opponents, but they won’t know who they are until June 2, when the Minnesota State High School League Board will share those results. Some schools that may be added to the play list are Waseca and Kasson-Mantorville. According to Activities Director Lisa Quednow-Bickler, some other states already do this scheduling type. They will be testing this system for the next two years.
