Blooming Prairie junior John Rumpza made his only hit of the day count as he blasted a walk-off home run to give the Awesome Blossoms a season-opening 16-15 win over Maple River (0-1 overall) in BP Thursday.

Rumpza stepped up to the plate with the sun setting, so BP head coach Paul Peterson was hoping he could get on base to start the inning.

“I told John if he got on we would bunt him over. Then he went out and hit one out of the park,” Peterson said.

The Blossoms (1-0 overall) walked eight hitters and allowed seven hits in the first five innings and Sam Swenson came in and pitched two scoreless innings to pick up the win.

“Sam is reliable when it comes to throwing strikes and then you give your defense a chance,” Peterson said.
