A LeRoy Township couple lost their home in a fire early Easter Sunday.
Mower County Sheriff Terese Amazi said the Adams and LeRoy fire departments were called out to a home at the 10200 area of 740th Avenue in rural LeRoy Township at about 3:10 a.m. Sunday after one of the homeowners woke up to smoke in their home.
LeRoy Fire Chief Tim Freerksen said the fire started in a large attached garage and spread to the home. The couple were safely outside by the time firefighters arrived at the scene.
Firefighters from Stacyville, Iowa, and Chester, Iowa, also responded to the scene, and there were about 40 firefighters total at the blaze.
The home was declared a total loss. The Freeborn/Mower chapter of the Red Cross has reached out to the couple and other family are making arrangements, Amazi said.
