Richard William Butler, 78, of North Mankato, Minn., and formerly of Austin, Minn., died Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at a care center in Le Center, Minn.

Richard was born in Austin on July 11, 1935, to Lester and Doris (Graves) Butler. He attended school in Austin until the eighth grade. He enlisted in the U.S. Army when he was 17 and served his country. He reenlisted in 1955, and served in the U.S. Marine Corp until 1959. After his military service, he moved to California and served as a police officer. While in California, he met and eventually married Margery Kerry of Austin.

Richard moved back to Minnesota and worked in security in the cities. He later moved to Austin to work in security as well. During his later years, Richard moved in with his brother to take care of him until his death.

Richard enjoyed collecting model cars, police badges and other items. He was proud of the several automobiles that he owned over the years.

Richard is survived by his sons, Richard Butler Jr. of California; Daniel Butler of LeRoy; a daughter, Desseree Nybo of Le Center; grandchildren, Payton, Dacoda and Amiley; siblings, Barbara (William) Sterling of Mankato; John (Marilyn Biesemeier) Roberts of  Brooklyn Park; James “Mike” Roberts of Anoka, David (Nel) Roberts of LaKota, Iowa; along with many nieces and nephews.

Richard is preceded in death by his parents, wife Margery, step-father, Frederick Roberts, brothers, Clifford and Ronald Roberts and an infant brother Donald.

A Funeral Mass will be at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 7, 2014, at Queen of Angel’s Catholic Church with Father Dale Tupper officiating. Visitation will be an hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery with military graveside rites performed by the Austin American Legion Post 91.
