Max E. Brown, 82, of Austin, Minn., died Monday, Jan. 6, 2014, of Lewy Body Dementia at Our House Memory Care in Austin.

Max Eugene Brown was born June 18, 1931, at Vermillion, S.D., the son of Freeman and Eva (Anglin) Brown. He graduated from the Vermillion High School and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. After being discharged, he attended college at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion and graduated with a bachelor’s degree. Max was married to Norma Lofgren on Aug. 21, 1955, at the Congregational Church in Vermillion. They moved to Austin where he began teaching in the Austin Public Schools. He attended Mankato State University where he received his master’s degree while he was a counselor at Ellis Middle School, where he was employed until his retirement.

Max was a member of the First Congregational Church of Austin where he served on many committees. He was also a member of Austin Elk’s Lodge, B.P.O.E.  No. 414 and Austin Post 91 American Legion. He was an avid reader, fisherman and enjoyed golfing. He loved spending time with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter Angela, two sisters and five brothers.

Max is survived by his wife, Norma Brown, of Austin; sons and daughters-in-law, Randy and Jackie Brown, of Hutchinson, Minn.; James and Dianne Brown, of Eyota, Minn.; Curtis and Sharon Brown, of Glenview, Ill.; daughter and son-in-law, Leah and Chris Brogan, of Mantorville, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, at the First Congregational Church with the Rev. Shari Mason officiating. Military Honors by Austin Post #91 American Legion.  Visitation will be at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Memorials may be directed to the First Congregational Church or to the donor’s choice.
