Hayfield girls can’t hang on against No. 2 Kenyon-Wanamingo

The Hayfield girls basketball team let a second half lead slip away in a 51-47 loss to No. 2 ranked Kenyon-Wanamingo (7-0 overall, 3-0 HVL) in Hayfield Tuesday.
The Vikings (2-1 overall, 2-1 HVL) led 39-30 with 8:19 left in the game, but a combination of turnovers and missed free throws hurt them down the stretch.
“We didn’t play our best basketball,” Hayfield head coach Fred Kindschy said. “We turned the ball over too many times in key situations.”
Hayfield hit just 14 of its 27 free throw attempts in the loss.
“We have open gyms for kids to come in and shoot so they can get better at free throws,” Kindschy said. “If kids aren’t going to go in and work on that, then we aren’t going to win a lot of close games.”
Hayfield scoring: Jessie Foster, 12; Dani Wagner, 11; Bhrett Zahnle, 9; Jo Bungum, 8; Rachel Masching, 3; Sophia Waldner, 2; Rachel Ausrud, 2; free throws: 52 percent (14-for-27)
