Senior center: Programs available to help seniors in Austin

Published 3:48 pm Saturday, October 5, 2013

The Mower County Senior Center has many great programs available to seniors in our community.

One of those programs is the chore program which has been a part of the community for more than 24 years. The program is for seniors 60 and over who reside in Mower County. The chore program does housekeeping, handyman work, lawn care and snow removal. Currently the program is doing lawn care and getting geared up for fall yard cleanups, house painting project, furnace filter checks and getting lists together for the snow removal that is right around the corner.

Sign up with the program if you’re interested in yard cleanup or snow removal.

The Lions Club is donating their time to paint a seniors home in early October. Sherwin Williams is donating the paint for that home. Applications will be available for next year if you would like your home to be considered for a painting.

There is a furnace filter project coming up for October.

What and where is a filter and why do I need to check it? Winter is coming and now is the best time to have your furnace filter checked. The importance of a furnace filter check or changing the filter on a regular basis is crucial to any homeowners. The filter is one of the most important items on any heating and air conditioning system. The filter traps particles preventing them from getting into the mechanical workings of the furnace. As the filter collects these particles, it restricts the airflow going through the system.

As this restriction increases, the blower motor begins to work harder in order to provide the proper amount of airflow to allow the system to heat and cool sufficiently. Continued restriction of airflow can cause some major problems to arise.

The restriction in airflow can cause the blower motor to draw more amps (increased energy usage), get hot because there is insufficient airflow to allow the cooling of the motor, and eventually cause the motor to burn out. This can be a costly failure.

Greenman Heating And Refrigeration, Inc. will be doing free furnace filter checks through the Chore Program for seniors (60 and over) in our community the last week of October 2013. Greenman and the chore program are happy to team up with this important project as many homeowners are not aware of the importance of checking the furnace filters.

Plus with any questions you may have a Greenman technician can help. Take advantage of this free furnace filter check and give the chore program a call. Please call or stop by before Oct. 25, to get your name on the list.
