The Packer volleyball team showed how good it is capable of playing in spurts against Faribault, but it wasn’t enough as Austin lost in four games in Packer Gym Tuesday.

Austin fell by scores of 25-10, 12-25, 25-13, 25-15.

After the Falcons (3-4 overall, 2-2 Big Nine) dominated the first game, Austin bounced back by jumping out to a 10-1 lead in game two as Trista Akkerman capped a 9-0 serving run with an ace.

“We’re so high and we’re so low. We need to find a medium,” Austin head coach Cindy Owen said. “They’ve made a lot of progress since August 12. We have to stay aggressive and we have to trust each other to be in the right position.”

The Packers were within 11-8 early in the fourth game, but they couldn’t stay in it.

Austin sophomore Shayley Vesel, who recently asked Owen if she could be more involved in hitting, was a strong force for the Packers as she finished with four kills and two ace blocks.

She said the win in game two will give the squad confidence.

“It gets me going to pick up a win like that. We didn’t come out strong in the first game, but we came out strong in the second game. We’ve got to do that every game,” Vesel said. “We’re working a lot harder in practice and we’re in a lot better shape. We’ve just gotta work on hustling more.”

Kelsey Sederquest had 22 digs for Austin and Mer Gach added four kills.

Austin stats: Trista Akkerman, 10 points serving; Shayley Vesel, 5 set assists, 4 kills, 2 ace blocks; Mer Gach, 4 kills, 2 ace blocks; Kelsey Sederquest, 22 digs; Marrisa Hart, 3 set assists
