NORTHWOOD — One man is dead, and a woman is recovering from stab wounds after a reported assault Sunday night.
According to the Iowa Department of Public Safety, deputies received a report of a possible domestic assault at 208 Fourth St. N in Northwood at 11:30 p.m. A deputy arrived and heard a woman screaming for help. The deputy entered where he reportedly found a man severely beating a woman.
Additional deputies arrived and tried to subdue the suspect, who went unresponsive after they put handcuffs on him. Efforts to revive him failed, and he was later pronounced dead, the report added. The female victim was airlifted to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester to be treated for stab wounds and blunt-force injuries.
Initial indication is the male and female were involved in a personal relationship. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has responded to the scene and is assisting with the death investigation. An autopsy of the man will take place at the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office in Ankeny, Iowa. Names of the deceased male and female victim are not being released at this time, pending family notification.
This is the second alleged stabbing in Northwood in two months.
On Aug. 5, Tyrone Washington Jr., 39, allegedly stabbed Justina Marie Smith, 30, to death in Swensrud Park. Washington pleaded not guilty and has a trial set for Oct. 30. On June 5, Donald Monte Baker allegedly stabbed Bennie Montgomery, 28, and Valerie Merrideth, 26, both of Northwood, after an altercation at the Schoolside Apartments, 607 Seventh St. N. Baker pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial.
