Austin will get a significant dash of color later this summer when five local nonprofit organizations raise money through a 5K walk/run.

Austin’s first “5 for 5” Color Dash 5K Walk/Run is set for 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 18, as an early kickoff to the second annual Austin ArtWorks Festival. The route is planned to start and end at the Downtown Power Plant with a “Color Explosion” finale. There will also be a shorter route available for children.

Proceeds from the 5K will be distributed equally to five nonprofits: The Hormel Institute cancer research, Austin ArtWorks/Vision 2020, Mayo Clinic Health System — Austin and Albert Lea, Austin Area Foundation, and Riverland Community College athletics.

“Art is all about color, and that’s what the Color Dash is good at,” said Belita Schindler, co-chair of the Austin ArtWorks Festival. “We hope you come and dash with us. Then you’ll be ready for the Austin ArtWorks festival.”

Cost is $30 per person or $70 per team of two to six people. With registration, each participant receives one white Color Dash shirt for getting “color blasted” along the course, one color pouch for the end finale, and a Color Dash swag-bag filled with fun Color Dash items.
