HAYFIELD — The No. 2 seeded Hayfield softball team didn’t leave any doubt as they opened the Section 1A West Division tournament with a 13-3 win in five innings over No. 7 seeded Waterville-Elysian-Morristown (4-10 overall) in Hayfield Monday.

Hayfield junior Dani Wagner put an exclamation point on the win when she crushed her fourth home run of the season deep over the left field fence in the bottom of the fifth.

Wagner said that teams don’t always give her pitches to hit, but she was glad to see one she could get a hold of.

“I’ve had a lot of walks. I’ve just got to be ready for whenever they give me something,” Wagner, who also had a double and finished with three RBIs, said.

Jessie Foster was 3-for-3 for Hayfield (10-7 overall), Bhrett Zahnle was 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs and Grace Mindrup was 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.

Hayfield will host Kenyon-Wanamingo Wednesday at 5 p.m. and the Vikings split their season series with the Knights.

Wagner is hoping to win that game, so she can get a rematch with Blooming Prairie after the Vikings had their season end on a 2-0 loss to BP last year.

“We want another try at Blooming. We haven’t been able to beat them yet and we really think we can,” Wagner said.
