Local Vietnam veterans are invited to bring their car or motorcycle out for the Ride for Healing, a VFW-sponsored event to raise money for The Education Center at the Wall, an underground museum adjacent to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Four groups of motorcyclists will tour the state starting on May 27 and ending June 1 to give Vietnam veterans a welcome home ceremony, as well as to collect items from families for The Education Center. The ride will stop in Austin between 10 and 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 28, according to Sue Register, quartermaster for the local VFW Post 1216. From Austin, the ride will go to Spring Valley for lunch at noon.
“Anybody can get in on this ride if they want,” Register said.
Register said the group will likely have a short rally and a slow ride past the Mower County Veterans Memorial in Austin to honor veterans.
The VFW is also selling poppies on Thursday, Friday and Saturday around town to raise funds to help the families of soldiers in active duty, or soldiers burdened by hospitalization bills.
Anyone interested in joining the Ride for Healing should contact Register at 507-219-6399.
