Clayton Dale Meyer, 82, of Austin, Minn., died Sunday, May 26, 2013, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin.

Clayton was born Oct. 14, 1930, in Nevada Township, Minn., to Clarence and Clara (Larson) Meyer. He attended a one-room rural school, Pinehurst, in Nevada Township in the Lyle, Minn., area.

Clayton served his country in the United States Army with the 25th Infantry, 35th Division in Japan and Korea. His unit was one of the first sent when the Korean War broke out. He served from 1948 to 1952, spending the last 22 months recovering from his wounds.

Clayton married Rosann Retterath on June 26, 1952, at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, Iowa. He joined the Catholic faith in 2009. He was a life time member of the VFW and DAV. He enjoyed many things including camping, fishing, NASCAR and especially his 14 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. He was so blessed to live a full life. He will truly be missed.

Survivors include his wife of 60-plus years, Rosann, Austin; children, Kathy (John) Lang, Smithville, Mo., Tom (Shawn) Meyer, Palm City, Fla., James Meyer (Diane Ashton), Austin, Christy (John) Heickley, Austin, Susan (Rolfe) Schroeder, Dodge Center, Minn., Don (Tresa) Meyer, Austin; beloved dog, Scooter; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his son, David; parents; and brother, Kenneth.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 31, 2013, at St. Edward’s Catholic Church with Father Jim Steffes officiating. There will be a 7:30 p.m. wake service on Thursday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. and also one hour before the service at the church on Friday. Military rites will be by VFW Post No. 1216 and DAV Chapter 27. Memorials are preferred to the family or DAV Chapter 27. Condolences may be left online at www.mayerfh.com.
