Audrey Elaine Hurmence, 87, of Austin, Minn., died Feb. 10, 2013, with her loving family at her side.

Audrey was born on Dec. 29, 1925, on a farm in Fayette County, Iowa. The eldest of three daughters born to Oakley and Marie (Bennington) Davis, Audrey graduated from Fayette High School in 1943 and attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette, where she graduated on Aug. 9, 1946, with a bachelor of arts degree.

One day later, she married Wayne Hurmence at the Methodist Church in Fayette, Iowa. Audrey taught high school business courses in Maynard and Randalia, Iowa, over the next two years while Wayne finished his college degree. They taught high school for a year in Graettinger, Iowa, and then moved to Independence, Iowa, where they started their family. In 1951, they moved to Austin, Minn., where they lived for the rest of their lives.

Audrey was a homemaker for 25 years raising her five children. In the mid ‘70s, she returned to work after brushing up her professional business skills at the Austin Community College. She worked for 20 years as a bookkeeper and an officer for the Minnesota Trust Company.

Audrey lived a faith-filled life. She and Wayne joined First United Methodist Church in Austin where she was an active member for 62 years. She was a Sunday School teacher, a Vacation Bible School teacher, newsletter editor, and was active in women’s groups and Circle. In later years, she established her own ministry to senior church members by sending personal cards recognizing their special occasions. She also held several leadership positions within the church and combined her faith and love of music through singing in the chancel choir and the contemporary music group. She and Wayne were also active in Questers.

Audrey was also active in the community serving as PTA treasurer, Girl Scout leader, a Miss Minnesota Pageant chaperone and a member of the Austin Symphony Chorus. She also enjoyed photography and took great pleasure in planning and taking touring vacations to visit U.S. historical landmarks and the natural beauty of America with her family.

Audrey is survived by her four daughters, the Rev. Mary Hurmence, Lakeville, Minn.; Helen Hurmence, Chaska, Minn.; Carol (Brian) Eidt, McLean, Va.; Sharon (Steven) Weber, St. Paul, Minn.; and son, John (Jackie) Hurmence, Caledonia, Mich.; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister, Norma (Bob) Mentzer, Tucson, Ariz.; nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband Wayne Hurmence; her parents, Oakley and Marie Davis; sister Shirley Livingstone; and daughter-in-law, Margaret.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Music Program; to Mayo Clinic, Department of Development, for heart failure research; or to Seasons Hospice of Rochester.

Funeral Services will be held at First United Methodist Church, Austin, Saturday, Feb. 16, 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Ted G. Colescott officiating. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery, Fayette. Clasen-Jordan Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
