Austin could be a more positive place to live, thanks to the Spread the Spirit campaign launched by Vision 2020 organizers this week.

Spread the Spirit, an initiative promoting random acts of kindness in the community, will slowly roll out through the community in the coming months, according to Community Pride & Spirit Committee Chairwoman Kristen Olson.

“It’s wonderful to be able to do something like this in the community,” she said.

Spread the Spirit cards will be given throughout the community, at first to volunteer organizations like church groups and nonprofits. As people do acts of kindness for one another, they leave behind cards letting the recipient know to pass a kind act on to another person, and to share their story on the Vision 2020 web site.

Susan Torkelson, a Riverland Community College student, designed the graphics on the card and was selected by the Community Pride & Spirit Committee in a contest. Smythe Printing also donated its services to print about 5,000 cards in the first run.

Cards are also available at the Vision 2020 office inside the Austin Chamber of Commerce at the Town Center building.
