Woody's in Rose Creek stands empty Tuesday night. The popular Rose Creek bar closed last week.

A longtime bar in Rose Creek has closed its doors.

According to records with the Rose Creek City Clerk’s Office, owners Joe and Nancy Coffman closed Woody’s Bar and Grill on Jan. 9. Neither the Coffmans nor the city clerk know what the future holds for the building, which was also Woody’s before the Coffmans owned it.

The Coffmans owned the building for the past five years, along with six lots on a contract for deed, but they said the balloon payment was too large. Though they tried to extend their payments, they were forced to sell out, Joe added.

“The bank ended up paying us to get out,” he said.

Joe claims rumors spread about the status of his liquor license and slowed business by 70 percent during the past weeks, which furthered the problem.

City Clerk Janet Nelsen said the Coffmans’ liquor license was still valid. The dip in business was a sour turn, Joe added, as he claims 2012 was the best year for the business.

“We fought like crazy to stay alive,” he said. “We had good food and everything else. … Sometimes your pockets just aren’t deep enough.”

The Coffmans have no future business endeavors as they will soon be moving to North Carolina. Before they closed, they reportedly updated some of the building’s features, including a new furnace and air conditioner. Joe appreciates Rose Creek residents for supporting Woody’s during the past five years.

“We appreciate everybody’s business, and we thank everyone in Rose Creek for all that they’ve done,” Joe added.

Before the Coffmans leave Minnesota, they will hold an auction at the Oak Park Mall in Austin at 10 a.m. Feb. 3 to get rid of some of property. Some items include chainsaws, snowblowers, antiques, a pool table and many household furnishings.
