While the flu season has been here for months, local public health officials are reminding people they can still get vaccinated.

Mower County Public Health nurse Ruth Lumley says the flu has been minimal in Mower County this season, but getting a flu shot is still the best way to prevent it.

“There hasn’t been a lot of activity yet, but it could happen at any time,” said Lumley, who recommends the shot for anyone 6 months or older.

A flu vaccine nasal spray is also an option for those without certain medical conditions.

Lumley says along with getting a vaccine, residents should follow the basics: wash their hands, cover their cough, and if they’re sick, stay home.

“The big thing is washing hands with soap and water, or with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer,” she said.

Flu shots and nasal sprays are available through public health, Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin and pharmacies.
