The Austin Human Rights Commission is looking for a few dedicated people.

The HRC has two open seats for its commission this year, and those willing to serve the community and look to better the conditions of every citizen are encouraged to apply.

The commission meets once a month on the fourth Tuesday, according to HRC co-chair Kristi Beckman. Beckman said commission members plan and execute various events throughout the year and interested residents will have many opportunities to volunteer.

“The time commitment is really something that someone can make of it what they will,” Beckman said. “It can allow for people to be more active if they’re interested in doing.”

Commission applications are due by Nov. 26. Mayor Tom Stiehm will appoint the new commission members at the Austin City Council’s Dec. 3 meeting.

The HRC is also looking for submissions for its annual HRC awards, to be given out in January of 2013. Beckman said the commission looks for residents who have contributed much to the community.

“We’re looking for people who demonstrate a dedication to helping ensure that people’s human rights are honored in the community,” Beckman said.

Five groups were honored for their contributions to the community this year, including city and county officials who last year agreed to a policy not to prosecute undocumented residents if they are the victim of a crime.
