BLOOMING PRAIRIE — Things couldn’t have gone much worse for the Awesome Blossoms football team as they lost 56-13 to Faribault Bethlehem Academy in the Section 1A title game in BP Friday.

BP (9-2 overall) had beaten FBA (9-2 overall) 12-7 in the regular season, but things were much different this time around as BP had four turnovers and two botched punts that put the Blossoms in a hole they couldn’t dig out of.

Blooming Prairie's Weston Fiebiger (6) and Brett Wacek (62) mob Bethlehem Academy's Adam Clark the second quarter of the Section 1A championship Friday night in Blooming Prairie.

“Dropped punts, dropped snaps, missed fumbles and missed passes,” BP head coach Chad Gimbel said. “We just didn’t execute plain and simple. You’d expect a team that’s been her six years in a row to have their composure a little bit better than that.”

Six of FBA’s eight scoring drives were less than 30 yards long as they took advantage of every BP miscue. The Cardinals took a 14-7 lead when Kyle Filzen plunged into the end zone from three yards out on fourth and goal and FBA went up 21-7 when Filzen hit Tim Angell on a 28-yard strike with five seconds left in the first half.

“When you play a team like this, you’ve got to play your best game. I would say this was very far from it,” Gimbel said.

FBA broke open the game in the second half when it scored three TDs in a three-minute span to go up 41-7.

BP will graduate just six seniors from this year’s team, while FBA had 17 seniors. Gimbel said he hopes his team puts in the work necessary to improve.

“When (FBA) was chanting over there by the bleachers, I wanted that to fester for a little while and make sure that’s motivation for next year,” Gimbel said.

Blooming Prairie's Coley Sunde fends off Bethlehem Academy's Robert Tait after a second quarter catch in the Section 1A championship game Friday night in Blooming Prairie.
