Primary races decided today

After today, the November elections will be clearer.

Local residents will have the chance to limit the candidates heading into elections this fall during this year’s primary election. There are plenty of local races that could be affected as a result.

Six candidates are vying for two seats on the Mower County Board of Commissioners. Polly Glynn and Bryan Young are racing against incumbent Ray Tucker for the District 2 seat while Paul Fischer and James Williams will go against Tim Gabrielson for his District 1 seat. The primary will narrow each race to two candidates.

Austin’s mayoral race will drop from five candidates to two after the primary. Dick Lang, Jerald W. Kelly, Joey Miller and Marian Clennon will try to unseat Tom Stiehm from office. Likewise, the four City Council Ward 1 candidates will drop to two after the primary. Malcolm W. McDonald, Aaron Jones, Michael Jordal are vying for the seat, while a fourth candidate, Zeke Dahl, dropped out earlier this month.

Nine Austin Public School Board candidates will head into the primary, but only six can vie for three open seats this November. Matthew Tabor, Carol McAlister, Don Leathers, Mary Jane Kestner, Kathy Glowac, Bud Johnson, David Price, Bruce Quitmeyer and incumbent Dick Lees are running for the office.
