With a roster that saw three underclassmen making their varsity debut for the Packers, the Austin volleyball team was a step behind in its season opener in Packer Gym Thursday.

Austin (0-1 overall) missed nine serves and it struggled with passing in a three-game loss to Farmington by scores of 25-12, 25-12, 25-20.

“In practice they were serving just fabulous and we were passing well too, so I ‘m going to chalk it up to nerves,” Austin head coach Barry Brobeck said. “We’ve got some young people who have got to step it up. We’re going to move on and the competition will be more intense.”

Freshman Shayley Vesel had five kills and a block for Austin, sophomore Danielle Hansen had four kills and two aces, senior Jenna Svoobda had three kills, senior Steph Justice had nine set assits and sophomore Kylah Miller had a block.

Austin held a brief 3-2 lead in the first game on Hansen ace, but the Packers never led again until the they took a 6-5 lead in the final game.

“There’s bits and pieces,” Brobeck said. “Our hitting wasn’t there tonight and we just weren’t making the best decisions. We’ve been together for a week and a half and from where they came it’s a whole different ball game.”
