Farmers’ market: Fall festival to include pie recipe contest with $100 prize

Are you good at baking pies? Would you like a chance to win $100? Well, you’re in luck.
The Austin Farmers Market is holding a fall festival Sept. 27. Enter our pie recipe contest; if your pie is voted tastiest by our judges, you win $100. The pie contest is sponsored by Piggy Blues. Look for other fun activities for you and your family that day as well, such as pumpkin decorating contests, live music, and more
Sweet corn season is here and we have wonderful corn available at our market. Buy six ears for $2.50 or 13 for $5. What a deal. Also available are many varieties of peppers, sweet and hot, tomatoes, summer squash, beets, kale, eggplant, melons, award winning salsas, pickles and jams, artisan, gluten-free bread, sweet treats and much more. A community that buys local is a strong, healthy community, so come on down and support your local, hardworking farmers.
The Austin Area Farmers’ Market is open Thursdays, 3:30 to 6 p.m. downtown, Main Street; Mondays, 3:30 to 6 p.m. at the Oak Park Mall; and Saturdays, 9:30 to 11:30 am., Oak Park Mall. Zucchini Bread
Here’s a wonderful and healthy recipe for zucchini, which you can find in abundance at our market.
1 1/2 cup whole wheat pastry flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
1 egg
1/3 cup expeller pressed canola oil
1/3 cup unsweetened applesauce
2 tablespoons nonfat plain yogurt
3/4 cup sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup grated zucchini
1/3 cup finely chopped walnuts
