Donald Orlin (Don) Shaw, 94, of Austin, Minn., died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2012, at Our House Assisted Living in Austin.

Donald was born May 25, 1918, in Kanawha, Iowa, to Joseph and Sadie (Hefte) Shaw. After growing up in Kanawha and working on various farms, he moved to Austin to work for his uncle. He was then drafted into the United States Army on April 15, 1941, and proudly served his country in Northern Ireland, England, North Africa and finally in Italy, where he was wounded. He was honorably discharged on April 15, 1945. Donald and Bethel (Betty) Danley were married on Jan. 6, 1945, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. He worked for the Hormel Institute for 35 years. A member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, the VFW, and the American Legion, Don enjoyed traveling and fishing and boating at their summer home in Lake City. He especially loved spending time with his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by his loving family and friends.

Survivors include two sons, Dennis (Marsha) Shaw and Brian (Lynnae) Shaw, all of Austin; three grandchildren, Emily (Dan) Osborne of Spokane, Wash., Brendan (Julie) Shaw and Justin (Melissa) Shaw of Austin; eight great-grandchildren; sisters Bernice Lindsay of New Hartford, Iowa, Caroline Neve and Evelyn Engelman of Austin, Eldoris Seidel of Waterloo, Iowa; brothers Robert (Pamela) Shaw of Hampton, Iowa, Orlan (Carol) Shaw of Spring Valley, Minn.; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Bethel (Betty), his parents Joseph and Sadie; grandson Darren Shaw; one sister Hazel Streitilmier; brothers Wayne Shaw and James Shaw.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin with the Rev. William Odermann officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 14 at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, with military rites by American Legion Post No. 91 and VFW Post No. 1216. The family prefers that memorials be directed to the Hormel Institute for cancer research, 801 16th Ave. NE, Austin, Minn. 55912 or St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin.
