Best Bets: Jammin’ in Johnsburg

Published 8:17 am Friday, July 6, 2012

Good news: It’s going to cool off this weekend, so there may be a few things to do other than bask in the air con. Though the forecast still says 82 for Sunday, folks in Johnsburg, Minn., will take that for their upcoming event.

1. Johnsburg Jamboree

Head toward the border — for the Johnsburg Jamboree, that is. The event is from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday in Johnsburg, which is about 10 miles east of Lyle. The event features a polka mass, brats, pies, a cake walk and two dance floors. Get ready for some good, old-fashion polka; and dance like the Norse. Admission is free.

Heritage at the Nature Center

Email newsletter signup

Make the kids remember their heritage next week at the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center, 1304 21st St. NE.

On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, the nature center features plenty of speakers and fun activities for all ages. Registration is $60. Pick up a nature center newsletter at the nature center or city hall and check out the menagerie of events happening this summer.

Comedy at Riverland

Picasso and Einstein walk into a bar … and Riverland is putting on a show about it. Riverland Theatre will perform “Picasso at the Lapin Agile,” 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday and each night at the same time through July 14. The comedy, written by Steve Martin, will be performed by students at Frank W. Bridges Theatre, 1900 Eighth Ave. NW, and is $12 for adults and $8 for students 16 and younger.

Sports samplers

Now that summer is almost over — the Fourth has passed, after all — it’s time to get those kids thinking about school and sports. The YMCA, 704 First Drive NW, has that covered with Tiny Tikes sports samplers from 5:30 to 6:15 on Wednesday. Registration is $5 for members and $10 for non-members.

Other events

Summer isn’t officially over, however, until all the small-town festivals have come to a close. Mower’s festivities are still in full swing. Check out Rose Creek Fun Days next weekend.
