Although the major league All-Star Game grabbed headlines earlier this week, an all-star game of another sort will be the big story in Austin on Friday evening when the U.S. Military All-Stars take on Austin’s Greyhounds at Marcusen Park.

Besides some good baseball — the hometown team will face service members whose baseball credentials include Division 1 college and even some pro ball — fans will have a chance to recognize the contributions that members of the armed forces have made to the nation’s freedom. Sgt. Nicholas Dickhut, a Stewartville man who died in combat in Afghanistan, will be honored before the game and a decorated Vietnam War hero will throw out the first pitch.

For anyone who enjoys baseball, or who simply wants to support America’s soldiers, Friday evening’s game will be well worth seeing. The forecast calls for warm weather with only a small chance of rain, and the tickets are $5 in advance at Hy-Vee or $7 at the gate — a small price for what promises to be a worthwhile and entertaining evening.
