Mary E. Erickson, 62, of Austin, died Friday June 8, 2012 at her home.

Mary Elizabeth Haney was born March 16, 1950 in Austin to Almon and Lurena (Bawek) Haney. She graduated from Pacelli High School in 1968 and from Austin Junior College in 1970. She went on to attend Humboldt Institute in Minneapolis for Airline Reservationist training. On Sept. 11, 1971 she was united in marriage to Leif Erickson at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin. The couple had two children. Mary worked at the Hormel office for 10 years. She spent several years raising her children. After living in Billings, Mont. and Omaha, Neb., Mary returned to Austin in 1992 and worked at Kid’s Korner, and then in food service for Austin Public Schools. Mary and Leif owned and operated the Cedar Ridge Golf Course in Charles City, Iowa. Her greatest enjoyment was being with her family, especially her grandchildren and sisters, and friends. Mary enjoyed reading, walking, golfing, motorcycle trips, and knitting. She made many beautiful scarves during her illness. Mary belonged to St. Augustine Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband Leif Erickson of Austin; her children, son Zachary (Regina) Erickson of Indianola, Iowa and Mary’s grandchildren Isaac and Caleb also of Indianola; daughter Lacy Erickson of Portland, Oregon; 3 sisters, Myra (Jack) Underdahl of Hopkins, Sister JoAnn Haney of Janesville, Minn., Marie (Rick) Knutson of Austin; 1 brother Kenneth (Marlys) Haney of Austin; her in-laws Don and Shirley Erickson of Austin; sisters-in-law, Cheryl (David) Duren of Hilton Head, South Carolina, Kelli (Richard) Hallquist of Owatonna, Minnesota; many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents Almon and Lurena; her brother Marlin, and her brother Joseph in infancy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Mary’s nephew, Father Mark Underdahl, officiating. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, June 11 at Worlein Funeral Home. There will be no reviewal at the church. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Memorials can be directed to the American Cancer Society. The family would like to thank the nurses on 4th floor at Methodist Hospital in Rochester and oncologist Dr. Mark Lewis for the compassionate care they gave Mary during her illness.
