The Austin Police Department was able to prevent a man from killing himself on Saturday after the man allegedly threatened people with a shotgun and then turned on himself.

Police arrested Joshua Hatleli, 26, of Austin after a 12-minute standoff at Marcusen Park at about 6 p.m. Saturday.

Hatleli was arrested for terroristic threats and fleeing from police in a vehicle. Police received a call from someone who said there was a man with a shotgun; however, the line went dead, according to Lt. Rene Phan. Phan said police searched the area where the call came from and couldn’t locate anyone.

Another call came in soon after from a woman reporting an altercation with a man at a home in the southwest part of Austin. Hatleli allegedly left the scene with a shotgun in his vehicle.

Police located Hatleli and attempted to stop his vehicle; but he didn’t stop, leading police on a short pursuit until he ended up in a corner of Marcusen Park. Austin Police, Mower County deputies, Minnesota State Patrol and a crisis negotiator were able to calm down Hatleli before arresting him. Hatleli was taken to jail, and the case will be forwarded to the Mower County Attorney’s office.
