Lair V. DeSart, 74, Austin

Lair V. DeSart was born April 17, 1938, in Austin, Minn. He graduated from Austin High School in 1956 and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1956 to 1960. Lair was employed by IBM for 30 years, during which he spent three years in Raleigh, N.C. and nine years in Harrison, N.Y. and Poughkeepsie, N.Y. He came back to Rochester in 1978 and retired from his position as resource planner in 1992.

Lair married Doris Dillon in 1982, and together they enjoyed traveling and sharing a partnership through the every-day joys and trials of life.

After retiring from IBM, Lair worked part-time in jewelry sales for nine years and most recently was employed by FTL Systems. He coached youth baseball and basketball in New York and Rochester for more than 15 years. Lair enjoyed bowling and golfing and was a member of the Kasson American Legion and Bethany United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Doris; brother, Wesley (Shirley) of Austin; sister, Joan Meyer (Bob) of Austin; three sons from his marriage to Lois Newton, Jon (Taira) of Kalispell, Mont., Jay (Patty) of Spanish Fork, Utah and James (Beth) of Savage, Minn.; one step-son, Jason Dillon of Rochester, Minn.; one stepdaughter, Deb (Alan) Schroeder of Parker, Colo.; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Ila DeSart and sister, Jean (Jack) Riggs.

A celebration of life will be held at Bethany United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 28, 2012, with the Rev. Dr. Wesley J. Gabel officiating. A visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
