The Spartans (10-9 overall, 8-7 Big Nine) tallied three homers, three doubles and a triple in the game.

“Mayo showed up to play today, defensively and offensively,” Austin head coach Tina Strauss said. “They really showed up and we didn’t. Our errors cost us and we couldn’t get any timely hits.”

The Packers (7-13 overall, 6-9 Big Nine) trailed 3-0 going into the third, when Mayo took advantage four Austin errors in the fourth inning to go up 11-0.

“I thought we were ready to play, but some days you do good and some days you lose. That’s just how it goes,” said Austin catcher Danielle Tschann, who went 2-for-3 with a double.

Austin now has a few days to regroup as it will begin postseason play Wednesday. Tschann said the Packers need to take a different approach when their season is on the line next week.

“We need to keep the chit chat going and have everyone talking. When we hit the ball as a team, our defense comes along so we’ve got to get the bats going,” Tschann said. “It’s a new season once playoffs start and we’ve just got to shake this off.”
